Zanzibar, Tanzania

๐Ÿ“Œ August 6

flew from Kilimanjaro airport to Zanzibar, via Precision Air
 daddy-daughter time

words cannot express how wonderfully behaved Owen was on this trip

Interesting vibe upon arriving in Stonetown. Much more conservative + mostly Muslim.
Most girls wearing a head piece, covering all of their hair.

24 people met and an outdoor restaurant called 6° South (of the equator).

leisurely lunch next to the Indian Ocean

 Shanny & Mary

our savior this trip: new coloring books and twistable crayons
they colored at EVERY stop

Shanny and I tried to go on a quick shopping excursion (Grace strapped to me) but only had 30 minutes to explore the narrow streets & alleys of Stonetown.  We had a 50/50 shot of turning the right direction and ended up taking the more scenic view of town before circling back.

playing soccer/football in a field, after school.

Initially had a difficult time adjusting to the resort.
After spending 4 days surrounded by people with NOTHING it took me a bit to enjoy Essque Zalu and not feel guilty about being there.

During the hour drive we saw tiny shacks, people hanging off dali-dalis (public transportation), vendors selling produce, etc. What hit me the hardest was seeing a few kids playing on a trash pile.  A literal trash pile.  Sure, they seemed happy but at that moment I was totally overwhelmed to know how fortunate we are, and how easy our lives are by comparison.

1st night at Essque Zalu, on the northern tip of Zanzibar.

๐Ÿ“Œ August 7: WOW!

banana tree

Breakfast & new foods (juices to try, including hibiscus + lemongrass, Baobab, Tamarind, and passion).  Relaxed and visited with Mary/Doug & Betsy, Shanny & David, Teresa & Miguel.
I took this picture... on my iPhone... as in this is what it really looked like.

We touched the Indian Ocean and experienced the dramatic difference between high tide (above/right) and low tide (below) by exploring the tide pools.
being careful as to not accidentally step on a spiny sea urchin

 Grace and I walking around

Kaden + Owen went to kids' club for an hour or so to paint & play with other kids (they had fun & so did we, alone with Grace).
dipping our toes into the Indian Ocean

swimming with daddy in the saltwater infinity pool

I got 1 workout on this trip: yoga on the privacy balcony while the kids napped
(Gracie outside in these two chairs pushed together)
and Ben played in the surf with David.

One unexpected highlight of the trip was getting to go on the Dhow sunset cruise.
I heard that we were going but didn't know much about it and I think my mind was preoccupied with the kids (their behavior, and if we were even supposed to bring Grace... NOBODY else was bringing a child, much less children to this... much less a baby.)
