Taos & Ojo Caliente, New Mexico

About a YEAR ago our friend group talking about taking a weekend trip to Ojo Caliente (mineral springs resort & spa) in New Mexico.   In July we finally sat down with our calendars and made a plan for the 1st weekend in October...
view out of town near the Texas-New Mexico border

WINDY selfie on the side of the road, entering New Mexico... because that's what we seem to do... take ignorant pictures on the side of the road (see OKC trip this past spring).

The best time of year for making this trip; Aspen trees on the way up Taos mountain.

There were so many options on where to stay and at first I had slight reservations about making the extra drive up the mountain, staying away from civilization (30 extra minutes from town).
I was wrong.  Best decision ever for unwinding, unplugging, and beautiful scenery.
LITERAL view from our condo

I would consider everyone in our group to be a pretty stellar cook, so we did the bulk of our meals here in the condo.  Added bonus: the food was excellent AND cheap!

and this was our view over morning scones and coffee

On our first morning we went on a chilly hike.

Hard to fully appreciate the grade of this walk.  We basically walked uphill for 2,000 feet until we reached Williams Lake.

I sometimes forget that I keep getting bigger every day.  As illustrated here...

And yes, that's snow on the ground.

I cannot tell you how happy I was to get to the end of our hike- partly because it was the hardest (physical) thing I've done in a while and partly because it was so dang pretty!

Ojo is a small, unincorporated community in Taos County.  It sits near the Rio Grande between Espanola and Taos... about 50 miles north of Santa Fe.

Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs is deemed sacred by the Native Americans of Northern New Mexico.  The waters here are said to naturally soothe the body, mind, and spirit.  It is also the only hot springs in the world with 4 unique, sulfer-free mineral waters.

taking a mud bath and drying in the sun, which was probably our favorite part.

On the way back we stopped at Taos Mesa Brewing Co for a few beverages
(and for Laci to flirt with this waiter, Damien).

Awwww... Leaving Taos...
